Since 1993, UT Martin has sponsored the West Tennessee Writing Project (WTWP) as an affiliate site of the National Writing Project. Dr. David Carithers, Associate Professor of English, serves as Project Director. It is one of the longest running programs of professional development for K-16 teachers, in English and language arts, and for teachers wanting to improve the use of writing in subjects across the curriculum, in West Tennessee. Teachers earn graduate credit or renewal points through summer writing institutes and are encouraged to initiate writing clubs or other programs to promote learning in their schools. Continuity opportunities are offered to WTWP Teachers throughout the year after they have completed the summer institute. WTWP also offers a variety of young writers programs including Saturday clubhouses and a week-long summer camp.
